Roger Maris trade to Cardinals

Roger Maris was a baseball player who played for the New York Yankees from 1960 to 1966. He was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals on December 8, 1966 . The trade was made by Bob Howsam and sealed by Stan Musial. In exchange for Maris, the Cardinals sent third baseman Charlie Smith to New York.

Maris was almost positive he would retire before the trade happened. He had been struggling with injuries and his performance had declined. The Yankees were looking for a third baseman and they saw an opportunity to trade Maris for Smith.

Maris had a successful career with the Yankees. He won two American League MVP awards in 1960 and 1961. He also broke Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs in a season in 1961. However, his relationship with the media was strained and he was often criticized for not being as charismatic as other players.

The trade to the Cardinals was a fresh start for Maris. He played for them from 1967 to 1968 and helped them win consecutive pennants and the 1967 World Series championship. Maris retired after the 1968 season.
